Things around you

Black Oak

Quercus Velutina

This tree, getting its name from its dark bark, is native to Northeastern America. Its sprawling canopy and up to 90-foot height make it a host for nests and burrows from animals of all sorts, and if you keep an eye out, you just might see one!

Black Oak

Pignut Hickory

Carya Glabra

Also commonly known as the Smoothbark hickory, this native tree produces bitter nuts which provide food for many animals. When hickory nuts are hanging off the tree, expect to see woodpeckers and bluejays nearby looking for a bite!

This tree gets its name from the bitterness of its fruits, which were deemed inedible by settlers and fed to their pigs.
