Community Park Redevelopment Project is now complete & the new Playground is OPEN

We are pleased to announce the completion of the Community Park Redevelopment Project in June and welcome you to visit our new inclusive playground!

If you have not stopped by the park, come see the upgrades to the pavilion area and new play-ground for kids 12 and under. The playground features a large structure for 5-12 year-olds with lots of climbing, spinning and sliding fun. The smaller structure is accessible for children of all abilities with ramps up into platforms to inter-active panels and a rocking boat, as well as climb-ing & slide features for 2-5 year-olds. There are plenty of swings available, with belt swings, two-seater swings, toddler swings, and a special 'Made for Me' swing. The playground also includes a flying saucer swing and 'swirl with me' merry-go-round for children of all ages and abilities.

Gundy Excavating and Paving Inc. worked with the Township on the construction side of the project, installing a concrete walkway from the parking lot, between the playground and pavilion, to a circular shaded seating area and new 4-square courts. The new walkway is paved right up to the pavilion and restrooms for accessibility. Gundy also completed improvements to the parking lot to create new handicapped parking spaces by the playground and pavilion. With new trees and landscape improvements around the playground, Steve Gundy and his team helped turn our park into a place kids and families will enjoy for many years to come!

The project got off to a great start by our Public Works Dept. in March. Once the old play equip-ment was removed in February, Bryan Ziegler and his team went to work clearing the old mulch and leveling the site while we waited for the new play equipment to arrive. They ran into a trouble-some area of shale where the new swings are located, and the playground installers needed a good jack-hammer to break through in order to put in the new swing set. Our Public Works Dept. also installed a good drainage system under the safety surfacing to alleviate water issues the old playground had when it rained.

This project was made possible and funded approx. 90% by grant awards received from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and the Department of Com-munity and Economic Development (DCED). We are also grateful for the letter of support from Dauphin County for the grant applications and to HRG, our engineering firm and Play & Park Structures for the design and build of the play-ground. Many thanks to our Board of Supervisors for their unflagging support & dedication to improving services for all Township residents.  While the project was underway, we renovated the pavilion restrooms to be ADA accessible and added gutters to the pavilion.

The new playground was officially opened with a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on Friday, August 4th attended by all County Commissioners, Senator DiSanto, Mark Zerbe from Represen-tative Mehaffie's office, Supervisors Chad Leese, Tina Hastie, Mike Yingling and many members of our community. Several elected officials even joined the 'watermelon eating contest', part of our end of the Summer Rec Camp festivities.

Come check out the completed project! The playground is open to the public during park hours, and the pavilion is available to rent for special occasions. Contact the Park and Rec office for information, 717-469-0833 x202.
